Making the Most of Big Data – Manager’s Guide to Business Intelligence Success by Boobal Palanisamy Kandasamy and Dr. Vladlena Benson is one of the most downloaded* titles on Big Data from Bookboon.com.
In the introduction the book outlines the principles of Business Intelligence (BI) projects, basics of architecture and associated development methodologies. It also highlights the top five factors as top management support, alignment between business and business intelligence strategy, flexible technical framework, effective information and BI governance and change management. The aim of the book is to help managers identify critical factors that contribute to the success of business intelligence initiatives.
The book starts by explaining the importance of data in the workplace around the world and by defining and explaining the relevance of BI. However, the authors if anything spend more time explaining the importance of BI (the first four chapters), as opposed to showing how to use in a beneficial way and providing examples, which was promised in the introduction. The book is well written and all the information comes from cited sources. The authors take the time to highlight the difficulties that organisations of different sizes have with working with data, therefore emphasising the importance of the book. The book provides numerous examples of how BI and Big Data are essential for the success of many organisations and also shows how to use BI from a managerial perspective. Also the authors aren’t afraid to state the high failure rate of BI projects, as they are providing a table listing the critical success factors of BI.
The authors interviewed several BI experts and put the information and guidance they found into the book. The experts emphasise many of the points that the authors have already made, and provide alternative success factors to BI. Another top tip from the authors is they dedicate a chapter to recommendations for organisations using BI.
I would recommend that the reader would need to have a good understanding and interest in the context of the book before reading. While the text isn’t particularly difficult to understand, it can be easy to get lost in it. Managers and decision makers in areas relevant to IT and those new to Big Data initiatives will find this text useful as an essential introduction to proven Business Intelligence practices.
